It’s been claimed that no other exotic animal has caught the eye of the general public like the pet hedgehog has. Their pricks, friendly and curious nature, as well as that ever-smiling expression have endeared them to millions of confessed hedgehog lovers around the planet.

The interest in hedgehogs does not end there, though . Till lately, these noteworthy little animals were nearly unknown in North America. But now, thanks to the ground-breaking efforts of breeders, the African Midget Hedgehog is now freely available and can be found in the houses of thousands of content pet owners. “But why,” you can ask, “is there such an interest in hedgehogs as pets?” Besides having a relaxed and funny nature, hedgehogs readily lend themselves to just about anybody’s lifestyle and schedule. Being diurnal ( awake parts of both day and night ) just like house pussies, almost everybody can find a time of day in which to enjoy them. They don’t need a large amount of room in which to live and their diet requirements are really easy to meet and, since they are solitary animals by nature they neither need nor require the friendship of another animal. Unlike hamsters, Guinea Pigs and other little rodents, pet hedgehogs don’t give off any discernible odour and they’re simply litter trained. They live much longer than rodents, too. With the right care and diet, your pet can live to be four - 7 years of age. Add to all of this the fact that they need no immunization shots and are very illness resistant and you can see why so many folks consider hedgehogs to be the ideal pet.
They have wonderful small raccoon-like faces, set with beady small black eyes and tiny pointy noses that appear to twitch consistently, checking out the different odours of the room. Depending on the color variation that you select, their tiny white faces might or might not have a mask.
Though not related to the porcupine, they’re often mistaken for them thanks to the quills that cover their backs. The likeness ends there since these quills are not barbed or virtually as sharp and remain attached to their bodies. Their small white tummies, on the other hand, are very soft and are covered with short, white hair. When scared, they can roll up into a tight ball and look much like a sea urchin. They’ve a short, stubby tail, but this isn’t seen since they keep it tucked close up their bodies. With their tiny legs and round bodies, it’s a real sight to see them scurry across the floor.

Of all the features of your pet hedgehog, possibly none stands out more than than the quills.
When you actually stop to consider it, they actually are quite remarkable. They are the main methods of defense a hedgehog has against predators, but they serve some other rather helpful purposes too. Diagram of a quillAlthough scientifically described as being changed hairs, every one of the approximately 7000 quills on a hedgehog’s back is far more complicated than any hair potentially may be.
Instead of being solid within, each is filled through with complicated network of air chambers. Not only does this make them extremely light and powerful, but it also helps to stop buckling and breakage. At the base, the quill narrows to a thin stem where it enters the skin and is strongly anchored in the muscle tissue by a little, ball-shaped follicle. At the opposite end, the quill narrows to a needle-like point and is bent a little back to provide maximum defense should a predator have an interest in having hedgehog for lunch! When attacked, it’s the contraction of the 2 massive muscles that run down either side of the hedgehogs body that cause the quills to be raised in defense. When those 2 muscles are contracted, ( very similar to pulling the draw strings on a purse ) they pull against the ball-like base of the quill, drawing it into an upright position. Since the muscles pull different quills in different directions, they have a tendency to crisscross each other, forming a near impenetrable barrier.
They are not only there for defensive purposes. Hedgehogs are spotted for being talented climbers but, like pussies, are not amazing at getting themselves back down again! When they do come across a drop that they can not climb down, they will simply roll into a ball and drop, permitting the pricks to soften the fall. To stop the quills from being damaged or lost, the thin stem just above the skin flexes on impact. Though we don’t endorse you try this at home, wild hedgehogs have been seen dropping from heights of almost twenty feet with no clear signs of injury! Many of the video games out in the market today had it’s beginnings many years ago. Such is the case of Sonic the Hedgehog, from Sega of America. People who first got their hands on Sonic games, did so in early 1991. Today, Sega realizes a market exists, composed mainly of people in their late twenties to mid thirties, who would still enjoy the first releases of Sonic the hedgehog and his adventures facing Dr. Robotnik. For this crowd, the developers at Sega have released a collection of over 40 games called The Ultimate Genesis Collection. With the aim of bringing back memories of the good old days that present parents may perhaps enjoy in the company of their children.
There are exactly 49 different games in the Sonic Genesis compilation. In terms of content, they are well known games, that most Sonic fans will be familiar with. You will be provided with every instance of Sonic the Hedgehog to ever come out on the Genesis, in addition to three distinct releases of “Streets of Rage”, and “Golden Axe”. Perhaps not many Sonic fans of today are familiar with an included version of “Altered Beast”, despite the fact that players who still remember this game, believe it to be the greatest game ever. In summary, all the games included in the compilation are well known games, and each of them enjoyed their two seconds of fame at the time when they where first released. For those who lost the opportunity to enjoy one these game titles, here’s your chance to catch up on you gaming experience. Some of the less known titles, players may have missed include “Ecco the Dolphin” and “Kid Chameleon”.
The games in the collection run by means of an emulator, the PS3 controls blend adequately in place for the Genesis pad. All games can be played via analog stick, or “D-Pad”, and the action buttons are arranged in practical, easy to use locations. Maneuver controls, and actions buttons are effectively displayed on the screen at the beginning of each game before you jump in. Plus, advances in technology allow for fun additional features not seen before in these game titles. Extras that allow the player to save the game whenever he wants, and to see additional features and extras for each game are such to provide a more fulfilling video game playing experience.
Any game player with previous experience using emulators is aware that they are not perfect. Expect some glitches in the graphic interface, causing minor interruptions in game play, plus a little static noise during game play. These drawbacks do not come as a surprise and should be expected when using an emulator to play games made in another platform. To compensate, the disc provides nine system games and several developer interviews, which must be unlocked by playing the developer related games included in the collection.
Is would not be fair to judge these games by today’s standards, they do not come with high definition graphics or digital surround sound. What they may hold for some of us are great memories, which we may perhaps share with the younger generations.

At the time, the existing competition in part of Sega laid on “Alex the Kidd”, a pretty unsuccessful effort that many video game players and fans hardly remember today. A team of developers at Sega got together, including Artist Naoto ?shima, designer Hirokazu Yasuhara and programmer Yuji Naka, to create what came to be one of the most famous video game characters to hit the game screens with over 50 million copies sold worldwide. Early suggestions included a rabbit with extended ears, and a Theodore Roosevelt look alike. In the end, their hopes where placed on Sonic, who carries the colors of the Sega company logo.
Now that the Sonic image had been created, artist and programmers went to work at giving form to their creation, and developing a video game around the blue blur. Finally, Sonic the Hedgehog game was sent out to retail stores on June 23, 1991 to expecting fans everywhere. The game contained many of the ingredients Sonic is known for today. Among the features in the first title where the creation of Sonic’s worst enemy, Dr. Robotnik, also known as Eggman, the green hills in the background, treasure hunting in the form of rings and the famous (very hard to get) Chaos Emeralds, and of course, his infamous speed for running, jumping through loops and dodging enemies. The game seemed to catch on quickly, with harmonious tunes that kept video game players coming back and spreading the word. The team at Sega had accomplished what they set out to do as Sonic and friends became a serious contender with Mario and Super Mario in the video games arena. Sega took advantage of this momentum and released Sonic the Hedgehog 2 in 1992. This time, Sonic was a little faster, bigger, and now counted with the introduction of Miles “Tails” Prower, one of Sonic’s best friends who followed Sonic around in his adventure, or could also be controlled by a second player. The game succeeded in adding to Sonic’s popularity, and as sales continue to rise Sonic came out in a cartoon series and also as a comic book.
A couple more titles continued to follow, many of which came out for Sega’s magadrive console, and the short lived Sega Saturn. But despite Sega’s misfortune with their game console, it has not been the case with Sonic the Hedgehog, which continues to entertain his millions of fans everywhere.

The sequel has several new features including a revamped rival “jostling” game-play system, which allows for closer head-to-head competition. The sequel also includes upgraded power-ups and range weapons. Card trading and collection in Sonic Rivals 2 has also increased and will now include 150 collectible cards. The cards will enable players to customize characters’ tracksuits, as well as unlock new PSP backgrounds and Cup Circuits.
SEGA has added a new multiplayer battle mode, which lets two players use the PSP’s game-sharing functionality to compete in six different ad hoc races using a single copy of the game. The multiplayer battle modes are: Knockout, where players try desperately to knockout their opponent before the time runs out), Ring Battle (where gamers do anything to make sure that they have the most rings when the timer hits zero), Race (where the goal is to reach the finish line first), King of the Hill (where players have to stay in the safety zone for as long as possible before their time runs out), Capture the Chao (where gamers must capture and hold onto their opponents Chao), and Tag (players fight to stay alive in this intense game of avoiding the soon-to-explode bomb). A single-player free mode has also been added.
Twelve new ring-filled stages have been created for this intense head-to-head race, where the ultimate goal is to rescue the Chao and uncover who is responsible for some dastardly deeds.
Main character Sonic has changed quite a bit in appearance since his 1991 debut as a fresh-faced, stubby-legged thick-around-the-middle blue hedgehog. By the late ‘90s he was sporting a new look, with thicker quills, longer legs, green contacts, and an even sassier attitude. He’s looking taller and thinner these days, and he’s even got a slightly different quill coif.

Back in the early 90s Sonic the Hedgehog exploded onto our screens and gaming would never be the same again. Here was a character who was a hedgehog that was packed with attitude and who was seemingly fearless. From the first game fans were hooked on Sonic and his adventures. Sonic the Hedgehog is a platform game where the object is to get to the end of the level, collecting gold rings as you go along and finally beat the boss at the end of the level. As with many games the further you progress into the Sonic games, the harder the levels get and the tougher the end boss is.
